Learn More About Crowns & Bridges
Traditional dental fillings were crafted from a durable, metal amalgam. While these restorations easily replaced damaged tooth structure, they also had an immediately noticeable appearance. Additionally, amalgam fillings required the removal of healthy tooth structure to provide support for the filling, and over time, the expansion and contraction of the amalgam could further damage the tooth or allow bacteria to accumulate between the tooth and filling. For these reasons, we typically recommend patients receive tooth-colored fillings. Made from composite resin, these dental restorations are shaded to match the surrounding teeth. After removing damaged or decayed tooth structure, we apply a small amount of etchant that makes it easier for the filling to fuse with the enamel. Composite resin is applied directly to the surfaces of teeth in a putty-like state. Once we’ve formed the filling, a curing light is applied to the tooth to harden the substance. Once in place, your filling will look and feel completely natural.
In most cases, the goal of dental restoration is to preserve natural tooth structure, but tooth extraction is necessary for some patients. We will only recommend tooth removal if this is the best course of action for the patient’s overall oral health. When we need to extract one or more teeth, Dr. Mercer can provide comfortable treatment in our Loomis dental office. Difficult cases may require our team to partner with local specialists to ensure your comfort and safety.
